Oct 12th Hanz Araki Concert at Empty Sea
Studios
w/Cary Novotny starting at 8pm
Award-winning
Irish flute player and singer Hanz Araki is the quintessential world music
musician. After six generations, the name Araki is synonymous with the
Japanese shakuhachi (an end-blown bamboo flute) which Hanz mastered, making
his professional debut in 1988. Cary has been
actively involved in the Irish music scene for 20 years. His trademark sound
has made him one of the most in-demand guitar players in Irish music today.
With unerring rhythm, boundless energy and versatility, he varies from
breakneck speed to delicate finger-style in the blink of an eye. Cary was a
founding member of former Lord of the Dance fiddle-duo, The Bridies, Johnny B
Connolly's Bridgetown, and
Portland's venerable Irish band Cul an Ti. Empty
Sea Studios is located at 6300 Phinney Ave N

Irish
Tune Learning Class w/Randal Bays on
Tuesday evenings, Sept. 10 - Oct. 29, 7-8:30pm in NE Seattle
Here's a good way to build your Irish repertoire in a
group setting and have some fun while doing it. The class learns one tune per
week, puts them in medleys and plays them together a
lot, so by the end everyone has at least eight good session
tunes in common... jigs, reels, hornpipes, etc. The goals of the
class are to build a repertoire of Irish tunes, and to improve at learning by ear. The class is primarily for beginning/intermediate players. More advanced
musicians are welcome but will need to be OK with learning slowly and with lots of repetition.
The traditional tunes are taught by ear, so bring
recording devices (no video recording please), and there will usually be sheet music
handed out at the end of the classes. Cost is $140 for all eight classes paid in advance, or $25 per
class. (Half price if you're taking regular private lessons with Randal.)
Location: Northeast Seattle (Ravenna/Maple
Leaf Neighborhood. Please send Randal an email to register or for more
information, and please pass this on to anyone who might be interested.
Thanks! Best wishes,Randal Bays
