January Celtic Events in
the Northwest
( wahoo...its
Rabbie Burns time! )
Happy Hogmanay &
First-footing to Seattle Scots
In Edinburgh, the Hogmanay New Yrs eve celebration is capped with
an evening of fantastic fireworks & celebrations in the street
Of course the singing of Robbie Burns Auld Lang Syne is
included. The custom of first-footing starts immediately after midnight.
It involves being the
first person to cross the threshold of a friend or neighbors home
and often involves the giving of symbolic gifts such as
salt, coal, shortbread, whisky, or a black bun ( fruit cake) to bring different kinds of luck to the
household. Food and drink are then shared with guests. This may go on throughout the early hours of the morning
and well into the next day as you roam from house to house. The first-foot
is supposed to set the luck for the rest of the year.
Traditionally, tall dark men are preferred as the first-foot
guest over the threshold for the best o' luck.
